Federal Scholarships

Federal scholarships are funds from the federal government to help students attend college. Many are earned through work-service programs and require you dedicate work time in return for payment or partial payment of a student's college education. Following are a few of the federal scholarships available:

  • AmeriCorps Education Award
    After successfully completing a term of service, AmeriCorps members who are enrolled in the National Service Trust are eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award. You can use your AmeriCorps Education Award to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education, for educational training, or to repay qualified student loans. The award is $4,725 for a year of full-time service, and is prorated for part-time.

  • The Colorado Education and Training Voucher Program
    A federal program available through the State of Colorado, this scholarship offers funds to foster youth and former foster youth to enable them to attend colleges, universities and vocational training institutions.

  • Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship
    This scholarship is awarded each year on the basis of merit to provide a scholarship for four years of continuous study at an accredited institution of higher education to outstanding high school graduates who show promise of continued academic excellence.

  • Montgomery GI Bill
    The Montgomery GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits for college, business, technical, correspondence or vocational courses, apprenticeship or job training, or flight school. Participants can receive over $36,000 in tuition.

  • National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program
    The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related research.

Remember four very important rules about scholarships:

  • Never pay a fee to search for scholarships or submit an application;
  • No one can guarantee that you will receive a scholarship;
  • If a scholarship sounds too good to be true, it probably is;
  • Your high school guidance counselor can help you find scholarships.
